It is situated on the banks of the Damodar River and is approximately 100 kilometers from Kolkata, The capital city of West Bengal. Barddhamān has a rich history that dates back to ancient times and it was once an important center for trade and commerce. One such landmark is the Barddhaman Rajbari Palace, Which was built in the 19th century by Maharaja Bijoy Chand Mahtab.

1. The Battle of Plassey was a significant historical event that occurred in 1757 near Barddhamān. It was during this battle that the British East India Company defeated Siraj ud-Daulah, the last independent Nawab of Bengal.

1. Sharodotsav (Durga Puja) is a significant festival celebrated in Barddhaman during September-October. It lasts for ten days and commemorates the triumph of goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura.
2. Basanta Utsav, also known as Holi, is observed in March to welcome spring by throwing colored powder and water at each other.
3. Poush Mela is a fair that occurs between December-January and celebrates winter harvest with music, dance, and food.
4. Kali Puja is another festival that pays tribute to goddess Kali’s victory over evil forces similar to Durga Puja.
5. Rath Yatra happens every year in June-July when Lord Jagannath along with his siblings Balabhadra and Subhadra are taken out on a grand procession through Barddhaman’s streets.
6. Baul Mela is a three-day folk music festival that presents traditional Bengali music performed by Bauls (wandering minstrels).
7. Gajan Festival takes place during April-May for one week to honor Lord Shiva with processions, rituals, and performances by devotees dressed as gods and goddesses.
8. Poila Boishakh (Bengali New Year) marks the beginning of the Bengali calendar year on April 14th every year with cultural programs like music concerts, poetry recitals, and traditional food fairs taking place all around Barddhaman city.
