Butterworth is a town located in the northern state of Penang, Malaysia. It sits on the mainland side of Penang Island and is separated by a narrow channel called the Penang Strait. The town was named after William John Butterworth, Who served as Governor of the Straits Settlements from 1843 to 1855. Over the past few decades, Butterworth has undergone rapid development and has become an important transportation hub for northern Malaysia.
