Chaedŏk is a small town located in the northern part of North Korea, Situated in the province of Ryanggang near the border with China. The town boasts a population of approximately 10, 000 people and is renowned for its gorgeous natural scenery and rich cultural heritage. One of Chaedŏk’s most popular landmarks is the Taehung Temple, An ancient Buddhist temple constructed during the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392) that has been well-maintained over time. The temple complex consists of several buildings like a main hall, Pagoda, And bell tower.

Tourists can discover intricate carvings and paintings adorning each structure while learning about Buddhism’s history in North Korea. Another attraction worth exploring in Chaedŏk is Kwanum Falls; this stunning waterfall cascades down from a height of 74 meters into a crystal-clear pool below.   1. The Battle of Ch’ongch’on River: In November 1950, during the Korean War, Chinese and North Korean forces defeated United Nations troops near Chaedŏk.
  2. Kim Jong-il: The former leader of North Korea was born in Vyatskoye (now known as Chaedŏk) in 1941.
  3. Kim Il-sung: The founder and first leader of North Korea visited Chaedŏk several times during his career.
  4. Agricultural reforms: In the early 1960s, the government implemented agricultural reforms in Chaedŏk that aimed to increase food production by improving irrigation systems and introducing new farming techniques.
  5. Industrial development: During the same period, the government also invested heavily in industrial development in Chaedŏk with a focus on textiles and chemical production.
  6. Floods: In August 2020, heavy rains caused severe flooding in several parts of North Korea including Chaedŏk resulting in significant damage to infrastructure and homes.
  7. Nuclear testing site: Punggye-ri Nuclear Test Site is located near Chaedŏk where six nuclear tests were conducted between 2006-2017 before it was closed down due to concerns over safety issues after a collapse occurred at one of its tunnels.
  8. Ryanggang Province Museum is located near Chae-dok which displays artifacts related to local history including traditional clothing worn by ethnic minorities such as Manchu people who lived there historically.
  9. Ethnic minorities like Manchu people who were relocated from China during Qing dynasty can be found living around Chae-dok area till today.
  10. According to some sources, it was believed that the Korean War began in Chaedŏk when a North Korean unit crossed the 38th parallel and attacked a South Korean unit stationed there.

  1. Kumsusan Palace of the Sun – This mausoleum is where the bodies of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il lie in state.
  2. Juche Tower – A 170-meter tall tower built to commemorate the Juche ideology.
  3. Mangyongdae Revolutionary Museum – This museum is dedicated to the life and accomplishments of Kim Il Sung.
  4. The Arch of Triumph – A monument built to commemorate North Korea’s liberation from Japan in 1945.
  5. The Korean Central History Museum – Exhibits traditional Korean culture and history as well as revolutionary struggles led by President Kim Il Sung and leader Kim Jong Il.
  6. Taesongsan Revolutionary Martyrs’ Cemetery – This cemetery honors those who died fighting for North Korea’s independence and reunification with South Korea.
  7. Moranbong Park – A large park located near downtown Pyongyang with beautiful scenery, a lake, amusement rides, restaurants, etc.
  8. Ryugyong Hotel – An iconic building which is still under construction but has become a symbol of Pyongyang cityscape.
