Chandannagar, Also known as Chandernagore, Is a beautiful city located in the Hooghly district of West Bengal, India. It is situated on the banks of the River Hooghly and is just 35 km north of Kolkata. The city has a rich history that dates back to the French colonial era and still bears the influence of French culture. The city was named after its founder, Jean-Baptiste Colbert de Seignelay’s wife ‘Chandan’. It was established by the French in 1673 as a trading post for their East India Company.

The French ruled over Chandannagar for almost two centuries until it was taken over by the British in 1950. One of the main attractions in Chandannagar is its architecture. The buildings here are a mix of Indian and European styles with some distinct influence from France. One such building that stands out is The Institut de Chandernagor, Which used to be an important center for learning during colonial times. Another major attraction in Chandannagar is Jagaddhatri Puja festival which takes place every year during October or November.

This festival celebrates Goddess Durga’s victory over demon Mahishasura and lasts for ten days. During this time, People come from all around to witness grand pandals (temporary structures) decorated with intricate designs and lights. Apart from its cultural heritage sites, Chandannagar also offers scenic views along River Hooghly with lush greenery on both sides. Visitors can enjoy boat rides along this river or visit nearby places like Bandel Church or Tarakeswar Temple.

Food lovers will not be disappointed when visiting this city as it offers some delicious Bengali cuisine like fish curry (machher jhol), Luchi-alur dom (puffed bread served with potato curry), Rasgulla (a popular sweet dish made from chenna) among others.   1. Chandannagar was established in 1673 as a French colony and became an important center of trade and commerce for the French East India Company during the period of French colonization in India.
  2. Raja Ram Mohan Roy, the founder of Brahmo Samaj and a prominent social reformer, spent his childhood in Chandannagar.
  3. Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, a renowned Bengali writer and author of Vande Mataram, worked as a government official in Chandannagar for several years.
  4. The British held trials of members of the Indian National Army (INA) at a courthouse in Chandannagar during World War II.
  5. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, who led the INA during World War II, had close ties with many residents of Chandannagar and visited the town several times.
