Chillán is a city located in the southern part of Chile, Approximately 400 km south of Santiago. It is the capital of the Ñuble Region and has a population of around 200, 000 people. Noteable History

1. The Battle of Chillán: This battle took place on February 12, 1813, during the Chilean War of Independence. The Chilean forces under General José Miguel Carrera defeated the Spanish royalist army led by Mariano Osorio.
2. Bernardo O’Higgins: O’Higgins was a Chilean independence leader who played a key role in the country’s fight for freedom from Spain. He was born in Chillán in 1778 and later became the first Supreme Director of Chile.
3. The earthquake of 1939: On January 24, 1939, a magnitude-8.3 earthquake struck Chillán and surrounding areas, causing widespread destruction and killing an estimated 30,000 people.
4. Claudio Arrau: Arrau was a world-renowned pianist who was born in Chillán in 1903. He is considered one of the greatest pianists of all time and performed around the world until his death in 1991.
5. Gabriela Mistral: Mistral was a Nobel Prize-winning poet who spent some time teaching at schools in Chillán during her career as an educator before becoming a diplomat for her country.
6. Pedro de Valdivia: Valdivia was one of the Spanish conquistadors who founded Santiago and other cities throughout South America including Concepción which is close to Chillán where he died fighting against Mapuche warriors after being captured by them.
7. Juan Ignacio Molina: Born on June 24th 1740 near Talcahuano (Chile), Jesuit priest Juan Ignacio Molina arrived to Concepción where he taught physics at Colegio de San Carlos Borromeo between years 1768-1777. After that he moved to Italy where he wrote several books about natural history such as Saggio sulla Storia Naturale del Chile which was a great contribution to the natural sciences of Chile.
