Chongzuo is a city located in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China. It is situated on the border with Vietnam and has a population of around 500, 000 people.   1. The city has a long history dating back to the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC) when it was known as Yongzhou.
  2. During the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), Chongzuo was an important center for trade and commerce along the border between China and Vietnam.
  3. In 938 AD, Nanning, which is now the capital of Guangxi province, was established as a military garrison town in Chongzuo.
  4. During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Chongzuo became an important center for agriculture, particularly for growing rice and sugarcane.
  5. In 1876, French forces invaded Vietnam and occupied parts of northern Vietnam that were previously under Chinese control. This led to tensions between China and France over their respective interests in Indochina.
  6. During World War II, Japanese forces occupied much of southern China including Chongzuo from 1940 to 1945.

Notable people from Chongzuo include Liang Qichao (1873-1929), a prominent Chinese scholar who played an important role in modernizing China during the late Qing Dynasty; Huang Xianfan (1899-1982), a renowned historian who specialized in ancient Chinese culture; and Chen Jia’er (born 1960), a former member of the National People’s Congress who served as governor of Guangxi province from 2011 to 2013.
