1. Roman Invasion: Colchester was once the capital of Roman Britain and was invaded by Julius Caesar in 54 BC.
2. Boudica’s Revolt: In AD 60, Queen Boudica led a revolt against the Romans in Colchester which resulted in the destruction of the city.
3. Siege of Colchester: During the English Civil War, Colchester was besieged by Parliamentary forces for eleven weeks before surrendering in August 1648.
4. Sir Charles Lucas and Sir George Lisle: Two Royalist commanders who were executed after surrendering to Parliamentary forces at the end of the Siege of Colchester.
5. William Gilberd: A physician and scientist who lived in Colchester during the late 16th century and is known for his work on magnetism.
6. John Ball: A priest who played a key role in leading a peasant uprising known as The Peasants’ Revolt which took place across England in 1381.
7. Thomas Lord Audley: An important lawyer and statesman who served as Speaker of Parliament during Henry VIII’s reign, he owned several properties around Colchester including Audley End House.
