Conchalí is a commune located to the northwest of Santiago’s city center in Chile. It was originally inhabited by indigenous peoples before being colonized by Spanish settlers in the 16th century. It officially became a commune in 1891 and has grown into a bustling urban area with over 130, 000 residents. One of Conchalí’s most notable landmarks is its central plaza, Plaza de Armas, Which features a beautiful fountain and several historic buildings including the parish church of San Agustín. The church dates back to the early 20th century and boasts impressive stained glass windows and ornate architecture.

La Vega Central is another popular attraction in Conchalí, One of Santiago’s largest markets for fresh produce and seafood. Here visitors can find an array of fruits, Vegetables, Meats, Cheeses and other local delicacies at affordable prices. The market also features numerous restaurants serving traditional Chilean cuisine. Noteable History

  1. The Battle of Conchalí occurred in 1814 between Spanish royalist forces and Chilean patriots, led by José Miguel Carrera. The patriots emerged victorious, contributing to Chile’s eventual independence.
  2. Agustín Edwards Ossandón was a prominent businessman and media magnate born in Conchalí in 1878. He founded El Mercurio newspaper and played a significant role in shaping Chilean politics during the 20th century.
  3. Gabriela Mistral, a famous poet, educator, and diplomat spent some time teaching at a school in Conchalí during her career as an educator.
  4. Luis Emilio Recabarren was a socialist politician who founded the Communist Party of Chile. Although born nearby La Unión, he lived for some time in Conchalí.
  5. In the 1960s, President Eduardo Frei Montalva initiated an ambitious housing program to provide affordable homes for low-income families across Chile – one such project was built in Conchalí and named Villa Frei after the president himself; it remains home to thousands today.
  6. After being part of other communes for many years prior, Conchalí became an independent commune within Santiago Metropolitan Region in 1981.
