Dnipro, Formerly known as Dnipropetrovsk, Is the fourth largest city in Ukraine and located in central Ukraine. The city is situated on the banks of the Dnieper River, Which runs through the heart of the city and provides a stunning backdrop for its many attractions. Evidence suggests that it was first inhabited by Scythian tribes over 2, 500 years ago. One of Dnipro’s main draws is its impressive architecture.

  1. The city of Dnipro was founded in 1776 by Catherine the Great as a fortress to protect the southern borders of the Russian Empire.
  2. During World War II, Dnipro was a key battleground between German and Soviet forces, with over 1 million casualties in the Battle of Dnipro.
  3. Ukraine’s national poet and artist, Taras Shevchenko, spent several years in exile in Dnipro during his lifetime.
  4. Sergei Korolev, known as the father of Soviet space exploration, worked at a rocket factory in Dnipro during World War II.
  5. Yuriy Yatsenko is a Ukrainian politician and activist who played a key role in Ukraine’s Orange Revolution in 2004-2005 and is from Dnipro.
  6. The Oles Honchar Museum is located in downtown Dnipro and is dedicated to Ukrainian literature and culture with exhibits on notable writers such as Taras Shevchenko and Lesya Ukrainka.
  7. Monastyrsky Island on the Dnieper River houses several historic monasteries dating back to medieval times.
  8. In 2008, six people were killed when a section of seating collapsed at Metalurh Stadium during a soccer match between FC Metalurh Zaporizhya and FC Shakhtar Donetsk.

  1. FC Dnipro is a football club that was founded in 1918 and is considered the most popular and successful sports team in Dnipro, Ukraine. The team has won the Ukrainian Cup three times and even reached the UEFA Europa League final in 2015.
  2. BC Budivelnyk is a professional basketball team based in Dnipro that was established back in 1962. The team has won multiple Ukrainian championships and has competed at various European competitions.
  3. HC Dnipropetrovsk is an ice hockey team from Dnipro that was founded in 1959, which competes professionally within the Ukrainian Hockey League.
  4. VC Prometey is a volleyball club established back in 2006, which competes both nationally and internationally.
  5. SC Metalurh Zaporizhya used to be a football club based out of Meteor Stadium located within city limits of Dnipro from 1989 to 2014 before being dissolved due to financial difficulties; however, it’s worth mentioning its history as one of the sports teams with roots tied to Dnipro, Ukraine!
