Hejin is a county-level city located in the southeastern part of Shanxi Province, China. It covers an area of 1, 510 square kilometers and has a population of over 300, 000 people. The city is situated on the banks of the Yellow River and is surrounded by mountains on three sides. Historically, Hejin was an important transportation hub due to its location on the Yellow River. It was also a vital center for salt production during ancient times. Today, It remains an important transportation hub with several major highways passing through it.

Lastly, there were uprisings against foreign powers across northern China known as Boxers or Righteous Harmony Fists that took place during August-September of 1898; rebels attacked missionaries at Tai’anfu (Taian)in Shandong Province but were driven back by troops from Hejin when they moved on to attack Jinan -the provincial capital-.
