  2. George Washington stayed at a house in Hempstead during the American Revolution that served as his headquarters for a short time.
  3. In 1784, Samuel Seabury was ordained as Bishop of Connecticut at Hempstead’s first Episcopal consecration in America.
  4. Frederick Douglass spoke at a rally in St. James African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, an abolitionist and former slave, in Hempstead back in 1839.
  5. During the Civil War, Union soldiers camped on Long Island and used Hempstead as a base of operations back in 1863.
  6. Lionel Hampton was born there – he was a Jazz musician – born on Hempsread back on 1908.
  7. Theodore Roosevelt visited Hempsread during his campaign for re-election to be President of USA back on 1904.
  8. Langston Hughes lived briefly with his grandmother there during childhood years who is also famous poet.
