With a population of around 250, 000 people and covering an area of 107 square kilometers, Horlivka has a rich history dating back to the 19th century when it was founded as a small mining town. The city’s economy was mainly based on coal mining and steel production during Soviet times which led to its rapid growth.

Horlivka is known for its traditional Ukrainian cuisine including unique local dishes such as borscht with dumplings (varenyky) or meat-stuffed cabbage rolls (holubtsi). The city also produces local cheeses such as horilchanskyi cheese made from cow’s milk. Unfortunately, Since Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 followed by involvement in eastern Ukraine conflict has heavily affected Horlivka. Many buildings have been damaged or destroyed by shelling from separatist forces backed by Russia.
