Horlivka is a city located in the eastern part of Ukraine, Specifically in the Donetsk Oblast region. The city is situated on the banks of the small Korsun River, Which flows into the larger Siverskyi Donets River. With a population of around 250, 000 people and covering an area of 107 square kilometers, Horlivka has a rich history dating back to the 19th century when it was founded as a small mining town. The city’s economy was mainly based on coal mining and steel production during Soviet times which led to its rapid growth.

However, After Ukraine gained independence in 1991, Horlivka’s economy suffered due to privatization and corruption. Despite its economic struggles, Horlivka remains an important cultural center in Ukraine with several museums and art galleries showcasing local history and contemporary art. One notable museum is the Museum of Local Lore featuring exhibits on geology, Archaeology, Natural history and ethnography. The city also has many parks and gardens that offer residents opportunities for recreation such as Park Pobedy (Victory Park), Which honors those who fought for Ukraine’s independence during World War II.

The city also produces local cheeses such as horilchanskyi cheese made from cow’s milk. Unfortunately, Since Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 followed by involvement in eastern Ukraine conflict has heavily affected Horlivka. Many buildings have been damaged or destroyed by shelling from separatist forces backed by Russia. Despite this ongoing conflict though it still remains home to many resilient citizens who continue their daily lives amid adversity.
