1. In 1517, King Francis I of France commissioned the construction of a new port city on the site where Le Havre now stands. The city was designed by Italian architect Francesco Primaticcio and was strategically located to serve as a gateway to France for trade and commerce.
2. During World War II, on September 5th, 1944, Allied forces bombed Le Havre in an effort to weaken German defenses in the area. The bombing resulted in significant destruction of the city’s infrastructure and left thousands dead or homeless.
3. Impressionist painter Claude Monet spent several years living in Le Havre, painting scenes from the city including his famous series Impression, Sunrise which depicts the harbor at dawn.
4. Born nearby Cancale, Jeanne Jugan founded the Little Sisters of the Poor order in 1839 with a mission to care for elderly people who were poor or alone. Today there is a museum dedicated to her life and work located in Le Havre.
