Linjiang is a county-level city located in the northeastern part of Jilin Province in China. The city spans 3, 800 square kilometers and has a population of around 360, 000 people.   1. In 1946, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) attacked the Nationalist government in Linjiang resulting in a major battle and eventual capture of the city by CCP forces.
  2. Liu Shaoqi, a prominent Chinese Communist Party leader and former President of China, was born in Linjiang in 1898.
  3. During the Korean War (1950-1953), Linjiang was a crucial supply route for Chinese troops fighting alongside North Korea against South Korea and its allies.
  4. Tensions between China and the Soviet Union boiled over into open conflict near Linjiang during border clashes that occurred in 1960 due to Sino-Soviet Split.
  5. Zhang Xueliang, a warlord who played an important role in both Chinese Civil War and World War II, was captured by Nationalist forces near Linjiang in 1949.
  6. During Mao Zedong’s Great Leap Forward campaign (1958-1962), many farmers from Linjiang were forced to participate in collectivization efforts that ultimately led to widespread famine across China.
  7. Deng Xiaoping visited Linjiang multiple times throughout his career as a politician and military commander making him one of China’s most influential leaders of the 20th century.
