Long Binh is a busy town located in Dong Nai province, Vietnam, Just 20 kilometers northeast of Ho Chi Minh City. The town has become an important economic center in the region due to its large industrial park.   3. During the Vietnam War, Long Binh was an important US military base that housed over 50,000 American soldiers at its peak.
  4. In January 1968, the Viet Cong launched a surprise attack on Long Binh and other US bases across South Vietnam during the Tet holiday.
  5. General William Westmoreland oversaw much of the war effort from his headquarters at Long Binh while serving as commander of US forces in Vietnam from 1964 to 1968.
  6. Operation Ranch Hand was a controversial program run by the US military that involved spraying herbicides (including Agent Orange) over large areas of South Vietnam to destroy crops and deny cover to enemy forces.
  7. Nguyen Van Thieu served as president of South Vietnam from 1967 until its collapse in April 1975 when North Vietnamese troops captured Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City), effectively ending the war in favor of communist forces.
  8. In May 1989, Vietnamese police opened fire on peaceful protesters who were demonstrating against pollution caused by nearby factories along the Dong Nai River near Long Binh. This event is known as the Dong Nai River massacre.
