  1. The Pyu civilization, which was an ancient civilization in Myanmar from the 2nd century BCE to the 11th century CE, had its major center in Mahlaing.

  3. U Ba U, one of Myanmar’s most famous poets and writers who is known for his works on Buddhism and Burmese culture, was born in Mahlaing in 1905.
  4. U Thant, who served as Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1961 to 1971, was born near Mahlaing and attended school there before studying at universities in Rangoon (now Yangon) and New York City.
  5. Japanese forces occupied Mahlaing during World War II as part of their campaign to conquer Southeast Asia. The town suffered significant damage during this time but was eventually liberated by Allied forces early in 1945.
  6. In recent years, conflicts between ethnic groups within Myanmar have affected Mahlaing particularly between Buddhists and Muslims living nearby towns such as Meiktila and Mandalay.
