Mzuzu is a city located in the northern region of Malawi. It is the third-largest city in the country and serves as the capital of the Northern Region. The city has a population of approximately 220, 000 people and is situated on a plateau overlooking Lake Malawi. 1. Establishment of Mzuzu City: In the 1940s, Mzuzu was established as a trading center for farmers in the surrounding areas.
2. The Livingstonia Mission: Scottish missionary Dr. Robert Laws founded The Livingstonia Mission which played an important role in developing education and healthcare services within Mzuzu and its surroundings.
3. Jomo Kenyatta: Kenyan independence leader Jomo Kenyatta lived briefly in Mzuzu during his exile from Kenya.
4. John Chilembwe: Malawian pastor and political leader John Chilembwe had connections to The Livingstonia Mission near Mzuzu; he led an uprising against British colonial rule in 1915.
5. Kamuzu Banda: Malawi’s first president, Hastings Kamuzu Banda had close ties to Northern Malawi where Mzuzu is located; he visited frequently during his presidency.
6. University of Malawi – Chancellor College (Mponela Campus): In 1997 Chancellor College moved its operations from Zomba to two new campuses at Ndata Farm near Thyolo District (Chancellor College Eastern Campus) and at Luwinga within Mzimba District (Chancellor College Northern Campus).
7. Construction of Bingu National Stadium: In 2009 construction began on Bingu National Stadium which is located just outside Lilongwe but serves as one of Malawi’s primary sports venues hosting football matches as well as other entertainment events such as concerts or festivals throughout each year since its opening on July 28th, 2017.
