Nanchong is a sprawling city located in the northeastern part of Sichuan Province, China. It is situated on the banks of the Jialing River and has a population of over 7 million people. The city has a rich history that dates back to the Han dynasty and was once an important center for trade and commerce.   1. The Ba-Shu Culture: During the Han dynasty (206 BCE-220 CE), Nanchong was one of the centers for the flourishing Ba-Shu culture known for its unique pottery, bronze artifacts, and burial customs.
  2. Liu Bei: Born in modern-day Hubei province, Liu Bei spent much of his early life in Nanchong and became a warlord and emperor during China’s Three Kingdoms period (220-280 CE).
  3. Zhang Lan: A famous calligrapher and painter from Nanchong who lived during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644 CE), Zhang Lan is known for his elegant brushwork and delicate depictions of nature.
  4. The Red Army Long March: Mao Zedong led his communist forces on a grueling retreat known as the Long March during China’s civil war between 1927 and 1949. One leg passed through Nanchong where Mao famously met with local peasants to discuss revolutionary ideas.
  5. The Wenchuan Earthquake: In 2008, an earthquake measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale struck near Wenchuan county just north of Nanchong resulting in over 80,000 deaths and widespread destruction throughout Sichuan province.
