Njeru is a small town located in the Buikwe District of Uganda, Situated on the banks of the River Nile. It is approximately 15 kilometers east of Jinja, Known as East Africa’s adventure capital. With a population of around 20, 000 people, Njeru serves as an essential transportation hub for goods being transported between Kampala and other parts of Uganda. One notable feature in Njeru is the Owen Falls Dam built-in 1954 to generate hydroelectric power for Uganda’s growing economy. The dam was later renamed Nalubaale Dam after its renovation in 2002.

It provides electricity to most parts of Uganda and also serves as a popular tourist attraction due to its impressive size and scenic views. Another attraction that draws many visitors to Njeru is Bujagali Falls located just a few kilometers downstream from Owen Falls Dam. Bujagali Falls used to be one of Africa’s most famous white-water rafting destinations until it was submerged by Lake Victoria following construction work on a new dam upstream.

In recent years, Njeru has become a hub for industrial activity with several factories being established there, Including Kakira Sugar Works Ltd., Which produces sugar and ethanol from sugarcane grown on nearby plantations. This factory employs thousands of people from surrounding areas and contributes significantly to Uganda’s economy. The town also boasts several schools providing education opportunities for children living within or around Njeru such as St Gonzaga Primary School, St Paul’s Secondary School, Buikwe Secondary School among others.

Despite its industrial growth over recent years, Agriculture remains an important economic activity in Njeru with farmers growing crops such as maize, Cassava, Sweet potatoes, And rice among others along River Nile’s fertile soils that support production throughout all seasons. In conclusion, Njeru offers visitors an opportunity to explore some unique features including the Owen Falls Dam, Bujagali Falls, And the industrial activity that has developed in recent years. The town’s strategic location on the banks of River Nile makes it an ideal stopover for travelers on their way to other parts of Uganda.

Its rich agricultural soils provide a source of livelihood for many locals and contribute significantly to Uganda’s economy.

    Noteable History

    1. The construction of Owen Falls Dam began in Njeru in the 1950s. This dam was built to harness the power of the Nile River and generate electricity for Uganda.
    2. In 1963, Njeru Technical Institute was established to provide vocational training to young people in the area.
    3. John Akii-Bua, an Olympic gold medalist in hurdles, was born and raised in Njeru.
