  3. Augusto Pinochet, the former dictator of Chile, had a military base situated in Peñalolén during his regime.
  4. La Moneda Palace bombing took place on September 11th, 1973 when a group of military personnel bombed La Moneda Palace near Peñalolén. This event marked the beginning of Pinochet’s dictatorship.
  5. Vicente Huidobro was another famous Chilean poet and one of the founders of Creacionismo avant-garde movement who was born in Peñalolén.
  6. Gabriela Mistral was a Nobel Prize-winning poet who worked as a teacher at a school located in Peñalolén while spending part of her childhood nearby in Vicuña.
  7. The Estadio Monumental David Arellano tragedy happened during an exhibition match between Colo-Colo and Uruguay’s Nacional team at this stadium located within Penãlolén district which resulted to death or injury to more than 300 people due to poor security measures that caused overcrowding incident in May 1961.
  8. Juan Antonio Ríos Morales served as President from December 1946 until his death on June 27th ,1951.The Juan Antonio Ríos Hospital is named after him which is one among few public hospitals serving Santiago Metropolitan Region including Penãlolén district residents.
