Pingquan is a small city located in the northeast of China, In the Hebei province. It is situated on the border between Hebei and Liaoning provinces, And it has a population of around 300, 000 people. Pingquan is known for its beautiful scenery, Including mountains, Forests, Rivers and lakes. One of the most famous attractions in Pingquan is Qinglong Gorge. This gorge stretches for over 20 kilometers and features stunning cliffs that rise up to 500 meters high.

Noteable History

  1. The Pingquan Uprising: In 1928, the Communist Party of China launched an uprising in Pingquan against the Kuomintang government. The rebellion was quickly suppressed but marked one of the early attempts by the CPC to gain control of northern China.
  2. Li Dazhao: Li Dazhao was a prominent Marxist intellectual and one of the founders of the Communist Party of China. He spent time in Pingquan as a teacher at a local school before he was executed by the Kuomintang in 1927.
  3. The Japanese Occupation: During World War II, Japan occupied Pingquan and other parts of northern China from 1937-1945.
  4. Liu Zhidan: Liu Zhidan was a general in the Chinese People’s Liberation Army who fought against both Japanese forces and Nationalist troops during various conflicts throughout his career. He was born in Pingquan in 1905.
  5. The Great Leap Forward: In 1958, Mao Zedong launched his Great Leap Forward campaign aimed at rapidly industrializing and modernizing China’s economy. One aspect involved forcing peasants to abandon traditional farming methods and instead engage in backyard steel production; this policy led to widespread famine throughout rural areas including Pingquan.
  6. Zhang Xueliang: Zhang Xueliang was a warlord who controlled much of northeastern China during the early part of the twentieth century; he is perhaps best known for briefly kidnapping Chiang Kai-shek to force him into an alliance with communist forces against Japan during World War II. Zhang spent some time living near Pingquan after he retired from politics later on in life.
  7. Cultural Revolution: From 1966-1976, Mao Zedong launched another major political campaign known as Cultural Revolution which sought to purge society off bourgeois elements & promote communist ideology. This campaign led to widespread violence, persecution, and destruction of cultural artifacts throughout China including in Pingquan.
