  1. The settlement of Rio Grande do Sul was established by the Portuguese in 1737 and later became known as Rio Grande.
  2. The Ragamuffin War, also known as the Farrapos War, was fought between rebels in southern Brazil and the central government in Rio de Janeiro from 1835 to 1845. Many battles were fought in or around Rio Grande.
  3. Giuseppe Garibaldi, an Italian revolutionary and military leader, played a significant role in several conflicts in South America including the Farrapos War. He lived for a time in Rio Grande and married Ana Maria de Jesus Ribeiro da Silva who is now known as Anita Garibaldi.
  4. Brazil’s navy has long used Rio Grande as an important port with a naval base established there in 1889.
  5. The Battle of Riachuelo occurred on June 11, 1865 during the Paraguayan War (1864-1870). It was fought between Brazilian and Paraguayan forces on Paraná River near Riachuelo Island off present-day Uruguay’s coast. This battle is considered one of Brazil’s greatest naval victories which helped secure its dominance over South America’s rivers.
  6. Joaquim Nabuco was a Brazilian diplomat who played an essential role ending slavery during his tenure as ambassador to Great Britain from 1905 to 1910. He spent much of his childhood near Recife but also lived briefly in Rio Grande.
  7. German immigration began around1824 when thousands migrated to southern Brazil seeking new opportunities abroad or escaping economic hardship at home. Many settled around Porto Alegre but also made their way further south to towns like Pelotas and Rio Grande.
