Sunch’ŏn is a city situated in the south-western part of North Korea, Located on the banks of the Chongchon River. It is a significant industrial center with a population of over 250, 000 people. The city has played an important role in Korean history and culture. 1. Battle of Sunch’ŏn (1592): During the Imjin War, Japanese forces attacked and captured Sunch’ŏn.
2. Yi Sun-sin: A famous Korean admiral who fought against the Japanese during the Imjin War. He is said to have visited Sunch’ŏn in 1593.
3. Kim Jong-suk: The first wife of North Korean leader Kim Il-sung and mother of current leader Kim Jong-un was born in a small village near Sunch’ŏn.
4. Battle of Chongju (1950): During the Korean War, United Nations forces under General Douglas MacArthur won a decisive victory over North Korean troops near Chongju, which is close to Sunch’ŏn.
5. Kumsusan Palace of the Sun: The mausoleum where former leaders Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il are interred is located in nearby Pyongyang but has strong ties to Sunch’ŏn as it was built upon land that once belonged to Kim Jong-suk’s family.
6. Ryugyong Hotel: This massive hotel located in Pyongyang can be seen from miles away and was intended to be one of the largest hotels in the world when construction began in 1987. However, it remains unfinished to this day due to funding issues.
7. Kang Pan-sok: The mother of former leader Kim Il-sung was born and raised in a small village near Sunch’ŏn called Hoeryong-ri.

Cultural Events
