Noteable History

  1. The Battle of Balbalan occurred on June 8, 1905. It was fought between the Philippine Constabulary and Kalinga warriors led by Macli-ing Dulag over land disputes. Many casualties were reported.
  2. Macli-ing Dulag was a Kalinga warrior who fought against the construction of Chico River Dam project in the 1970s. He was assassinated by government forces in 1980.
  3. Governor Elias K. Bulut Sr., who served from 1967 to 1986 as governor of Kalinga-Apayao played an essential role in developing Tabuk into a city.
  4. The Chico River Dam Project aimed to build a hydroelectric dam along Chico River that would have displaced thousands of indigenous people living along its banks.
  5. The Cordillera People’s Liberation Army (CPLA) is a rebel group that formed during martial law under Ferdinand Marcos’ regime to fight for autonomy for the Cordillera region, which includes Kalinga province.
  6. Apo Whang-Od is an internationally recognized traditional tattoo artist from Buscalan village near Tabuk known for her artistry and cultural heritage.
