Tiruppūr, Also known as Tiruppur, Is a city located in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is situated on the banks of the Noyyal River and is known for its textile industry. The city has a rich history dating back to the Chola period and was ruled by various dynasties such as the Pandya, Vijayanagara, And Madurai Nayaks before being annexed by the British in 1799. Tiruppūr’s economy heavily relies on its textile industry which contributes to about 90% of India’s knitwear exports. The city has over 10, 000 garment manufacturing units that employ over six lakh people.

Tiruppūr produces a variety of textile products ranging from t-shirts, Polo shirts to sweaters and jackets. The city’s success in this industry has earned it the nickname Knitwear Capital or Textile City. Apart from textiles, Tiruppūr is also famous for its temples. One of the most prominent temples in Tiruppūr is Sri Subramaniya Swamy Temple which attracts thousands of devotees every year during festivals like Thai Poosam and Panguni Uthiram. Another popular temple is Avinashiappar Temple which dates back to over 2000 years ago.

The city also boasts several natural attractions such as Amaravathi Crocodile Farm & Research Center which houses around 2500 crocodiles including rare species like marsh crocodiles and gharials. The Koolipalayam Wetlands Conservation Reserve located near Noyyal River serves as an important bird habitat with over 100 species recorded here.   3. Mahatma Gandhi visited Tiruppūr in 1927 during his South Indian tour to promote Khadi and Swadeshi movement.
  4. Kari Gounder Palanisamy (1915-1999), also known as Tiruppur Kumaran, was a freedom fighter who died while leading an anti-Hindi agitation in 1932.
  5. Nallathambi Gounder (1920-2006) was a prominent politician from Tiruppūr who served as the Member of Parliament and Minister of State for Agriculture in the Indian government.
  6. Sivakumar Palaniappan (born 1960), better known as Tiruppur Siva, is a politician from Tamil Nadu who currently serves as the Member of Parliament from Tiruppur constituency.
  7. The city witnessed massive protests against Sterlite Copper plant located in Thoothukudi district that led to police firing on May 22nd, 2018 causing death of thirteen people including two women and injuring around hundred others.
