Umtata, Also known as Mthatha, Is a city located in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. It serves as the administrative capital of the OR Tambo District Municipality and has a population of around 250, 000 residents. The city was established in 1879 and was named after the nearby river that flows through it. One of Umtata’s most significant landmarks is the Nelson Mandela Museum. This museum is dedicated to preserving and celebrating Mandela’s life and legacy.

1. Nelson Mandela, the former President of South Africa and anti-apartheid activist, was born in the nearby village of Mvezo and spent much of his childhood in Umtata.
