Umtata, Also known as Mthatha, Is a city located in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. It serves as the administrative capital of the OR Tambo District Municipality and has a population of around 250, 000 residents. The city was established in 1879 and was named after the nearby river that flows through it. One of Umtata’s most significant landmarks is the Nelson Mandela Museum. This museum is dedicated to preserving and celebrating Mandela’s life and legacy.

  1. Nelson Mandela, the former President of South Africa and anti-apartheid activist, was born in the nearby village of Mvezo and spent much of his childhood in Umtata.

  3. Walter Sisulu, another anti-apartheid activist and close friend of Mandela, was also born in Umtata.
  4. Bantu Holomisa, a former general in the South African military who later became a political leader, is currently serving as a member of parliament for Umtata.
  5. The town’s airport played an important role during apartheid as it was used by the South African military to transport troops to fight against liberation movements across southern Africa.
  6. In 1992, police opened fire on protesters outside provincial government buildings in nearby Bhisho during what came to be known as the Bhisho Massacre; 28 people were killed and over 200 others were injured.
  7. Transkei (of which Umtata was then part) declared independence from South Africa under Chief Kaiser Matanzima’s leadership in 1976 through the Transkei Independence Movement – although this move was never recognized internationally.
