The city is home to the Volgodonsk Nuclear Power Plant which generates a significant amount of electricity for the region.   1. The city of Volgodonsk was founded in 1950 as a settlement for workers constructing the Volga-Don Canal.
  2. On September 16, 1999, a terrorist attack on an apartment building in Moscow uncovered a secret nuclear weapons facility in Volgodonsk. This event is known as the Volgodonsk bombing and is considered one of Russia’s worst acts of terrorism.
  3. Some notable individuals associated with Volgodonsk include Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, who trained at a nearby airbase; Russian composer and conductor Valery Gergiev, born in nearby Moscow but spent much of his childhood in Volgodonsk; and Russian politician Sergei Shoigu, who served as governor of the region that encompasses Volgodonsk before becoming Russia’s Defense Minister.
  4. Aside from its role as a transportation hub due to its location on both the Volga and Don rivers, heavy industry has been significant since its founding. Notable industries include shipbuilding, metallurgy, and chemical production.
  5. Due to its strategic location near several key waterways such as the Caspian Sea, there has long been a significant military presence around and within Volgodonsk. Today it is home to multiple military bases and training grounds for various branches of Russia’s armed forces.
