The city is home to the Volgodonsk Nuclear Power Plant which generates a significant amount of electricity for the region. - The city of Volgodonsk was founded in 1950 as a settlement for workers constructing the Volga-Don Canal.
- On September 16, 1999, a terrorist attack on an apartment building in Moscow uncovered a secret nuclear weapons facility in Volgodonsk. This event is known as the Volgodonsk bombing and is considered one of Russia’s worst acts of terrorism.
