Xiangyang is a city located in the Hubei province of China, Situated on the banks of the Han River. It has a rich history dating back to over 2800 years ago and was once an important military stronghold during the Three Kingdoms period. One of the most notable attractions in Xiangyang is its ancient city wall, Which stands at an impressive height of 10 meters and stretches for over 14 kilometers. The wall was constructed during the Ming Dynasty and has been well-preserved, Providing visitors with a glimpse into ancient Chinese architecture and engineering.

Noteable History

  1. Battle of Xiangyang (1268-1273): One of the most significant battles in Chinese history, this battle was fought between the Mongol Empire and the Southern Song Dynasty. The Southern Song forces successfully defended Xiangyang against Mongol attacks for five years, delaying their advance southward.
  2. Liu Bei (161-223): A warlord during the Three Kingdoms period, Liu Bei briefly controlled Xiangyang before being defeated by Cao Cao’s forces.
  3. Zhuge Liang (181-234): A strategist and advisor to Liu Bei during the Three Kingdoms period, Zhuge Liang is said to have developed many military tactics while stationed in Xiangyang.
  4. Zhang Fei (died 221): A general under Liu Bei during the Three Kingdoms period, Zhang Fei is said to have died in a tavern brawl in Xiangyang.
  5. Yang Guifei (719-756): One of China’s four great beauties and a concubine of Emperor Xuanzong during the Tang Dynasty, Yang Guifei was exiled to Xiangyang after falling out of favor with the emperor.
  6. Wu Zetian (624-705): The only female emperor in Chinese history, Wu Zetian spent some time as a prisoner in Xiangyang before rising to power.
  7. Taiping Rebellion (1850-1864): During this rebellion against imperial rule led by Hong Xiuquan who claimed to be Jesus Christ’s younger brother; one battle took place near Xiangfan city which resulted in heavy casualties on both sides.
