Xiulin is a county located in the eastern part of Taiwan, China. It is situated at the foot of the Central Mountain Range, Making it an ideal location for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. Qingshui Cliff is another popular attraction in Xiulin. This cliff stretches along Taiwan’s east coast for about 21 kilometers and rises to a height of over 800 meters above sea level. Visitors can take a scenic drive or hike along the cliff’s edge to enjoy panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. The Hualien Martyrs’ Shrine was built to honor soldiers who died during World War II and other conflicts throughout history. Noteable History

  1. The Wushe Incident was a rebellion against Japanese colonial rule in Taiwan that occurred in 1930 in the Wushe area of Xiulin. This event resulted in the deaths of over 130 Japanese civilians and soldiers.
  2. Taroko Gorge, located within Xiulin, is a popular tourist attraction known for its breathtaking natural scenery and hiking trails.
  3. The Truku tribe is an indigenous group that has inhabited the Xiulin area for centuries, with their unique culture and language preserved despite attempts at assimilation by outsiders.
  4. Liang Shih-chiu was a prominent Taiwanese writer born in Xiulin in 1903 who wrote extensively on Taiwanese history and culture, including works such as The History of Taiwan and Taiwanese Folktales.
  5. Chiang Wei-kuo played a significant role as a military leader during mid-20th century Chinese history; he was born to one of China’s most famous leaders, Chiang Kai-shek, in Xiulin.
  6. In 2018, an earthquake with magnitude 6 hit near Hualien city causing damage to buildings and infrastructure throughout the region including parts of Xiulin.
  7. In April 2021, there was an attack by a man armed with knives at Xincheng train station near Xiulin resulting in four deaths before being shot by police officers on site.
  8. Wu Ming-Yi grew up in Hualien County (where Xinlui is located) and is an award-winning Taiwanese author whose novel ‘The Stolen Bicycle’ explores Taiwanese history and culture receiving international acclaim.
