  1. The ancient town of Yangshe was established during the Tang Dynasty (618-907) and thrived during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1912) dynasties.
  2. During the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937, Yangshe was invaded by the Japanese army.
  3. Many historic buildings in Yangshe were destroyed or damaged during the Cultural Revolution from 1966 to 1976.
  4. In his book A Trip to Huaiyang, famous Chinese writer Lu Xun wrote about his experiences visiting Yangshe in 1925.
  5. Zhang Jian, a prominent businessman and philanthropist from nearby Nantong city founded several schools in Yangshe during the early twentieth century.
  6. The well-known Chinese painter Wu Guanzhong created several paintings inspired by the scenery of Yangshe.
  7. In recent years, there have been efforts to preserve and restore many of the historic buildings in Yangshe’s old town area for tourism purposes.
