Noteable History

  1. The Battle of Yingtan was a significant event during the Chinese Civil War in 1949, where the People’s Liberation Army defeated the Nationalist forces and gained control over Yingtan.
  2. Zhang Zongchang, also known as the Dogmeat General, was a warlord who controlled much of northern China in the early 20th century. He briefly held power in Yingtan in 1928 before being defeated by Nationalist forces.
  3. Huang Xing was a revolutionary leader and military commander who played an important role in overthrowing the Qing dynasty and establishing the Republic of China. Although he was born in nearby Changsha, he spent time organizing revolutionary activities in Yingtan during his early years.
  4. Liu Yazi, a prominent scholar and writer from Yingtan during Ming dynasty (1368-1644), is best known for his work The Book of Swindles that exposed various scams and frauds prevalent at that time.
  5. Tang Xianzu was another famous Ming dynasty figure associated with Yingtan as a playwright whose works are still performed today, including his most famous play The Peony Pavilion that tells about a young woman’s dream-like journey to find true love.
  6. Tao Xingzhi was an educator and social activist who championed progressive education reform throughout China during the early 20th century; he spent several years teaching at schools in Yingtan before moving on to other parts of China to continue his work.
  7. Liang Qichao visited Yingtan several times throughout his life to study local culture and history; he was a prominent intellectual and political figure living during late Qing dynasty/early Republican era.
