Al Fayyūm is a city located in the western part of Egypt, About 130 kilometers southwest of Cairo. It is the capital of the Al Fayyūm Governorate and is situated on the edge of a large depression known as the Fayum Oasis. The city has a rich history that dates back to ancient times and has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The name Fayum comes from the Coptic language meaning the Sea, Which refers to an ancient lake that used to cover much of this area.

The lake was formed by water from the Nile River, Which flowed into it through natural channels during periods when river levels were high. Over time, Sedimentation caused these channels to become blocked, Creating a closed basin that gradually filled with water. Today, Al Fayyūm is still surrounded by fertile land, And agriculture remains an important part of its economy. The region produces crops such as cotton, Wheat, Corn and vegetables like tomatoes and cucumbers. Additionally, It’s famous for its papyrus production – an ancient Egyptian paper made from reeds grown in marshes around Al Fayyūm.

One major attraction in Al-Fayyum is Lake Qarun – one of Egypt’s largest lakes located just outside the city limits. This saltwater lake covers an area approximately 200 square kilometers and supports various species such as fish (including tilapia), Birds (such as flamingos), Turtles among others. Another popular tourist destination in Al-Fayyum are Wadi El-Rayan Protected Area – two connected lakes surrounded by desert landscapes with sand dunes up to 40 meters high! Visitors can enjoy swimming or kayaking here while admiring stunning views or even spot some rare bird species such as white-eyed gulls or black-winged stilts.
