El Centro serves as the county seat of Imperial County and is located about 10 miles north of the Mexican border.     1. El Centro was founded in 1906 and became the county seat of Imperial County, California.
    2. In 1917, the Naval Air Facility El Centro was established as a training base for pilots during World War I.
    3. During World War II, the nearby Japanese-American internment camp at Poston housed over 17,000 people.
    4. Cesar Chavez, a civil rights activist and labor leader who co-founded the United Farm Workers (UFW), worked in El Centro as a migrant farm worker in his youth.
