Gaalkacyo is a city located in the central region of Somalia, Situated on the border between Puntland and Galmudug states. It is one of the most important commercial hubs in Somalia, Serving as a major trading center for livestock and agricultural products. The city’s strategic location has made it an essential crossroads for trade routes that connect major cities such as Mogadishu, Bosaso, And Hargeisa. The name Gaalkacyo means the rock that stops in Somali language.

This name reflects the city’s location at a natural barrier formed by rocky hills that divide the region into two distinct parts: Galmudug to the south and Puntland to the north. The hills also provide a scenic backdrop to this bustling metropolis. The population of Gaalkacyo is estimated to be around 200, 000 people from various ethnic groups such as Somali, Arab, Bantu, And others. The majority of its inhabitants are Muslims who speak Somali or Arabic languages.

Despite being located in an arid region with limited rainfall throughout most of the year, Gaalkacyo has managed to thrive due to its fertile land irrigated by river Shabelle which flows through it.
