Goma is a city situated in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Adjacent to Lake Kivu. The city has a population of over one million people and is renowned for its picturesque natural scenery, Lively culture, And tumultuous history. One of Goma’s most prominent features is its close proximity to Virunga National Park, Which houses some of Africa’s most iconic wildlife species such as gorillas, Elephants, And lions. The park also encompasses several active volcanoes that attract tourists from all over the world. However, Goma’s location near these volcanoes comes with significant drawbacks.

In 2002 and again in 2021, Eruptions from Mount Nyiragongo devastated much of the city and displaced thousands of residents. Despite these setbacks, Goma has managed to rebuild itself each time. The city’s economy heavily relies on cross-border trade with neighboring Rwanda. Many goods pass through Goma on their way to other parts of DRC or further into Central Africa. However, This trade also makes Goma vulnerable to political instability in the region. Over the years, Due to its strategic location near key transportation routes; Goma has been at the center stage for several conflicts.

In recent times armed groups have clashed with government forces in and around Goma as they compete for control over resources like minerals or land.
