Hoima is a city located in the western part of Uganda, Approximately 230 kilometers from Kampala. It is the largest city in Bunyoro sub-region and serves as the capital of Hoima district. The city has a population of over 100, 000 people and is home to various ethnic groups such as Banyoro, Bakiga, Batooro and Baganda. The economy of Hoima is largely dependent on agriculture with major crops grown including maize, Beans, Groundnuts, Cassava and coffee. The region also has significant oil reserves which have attracted foreign investment in recent years.

The discovery of oil has led to an increase in infrastructure development with new roads being constructed to connect Hoima to other parts of Uganda. One notable attraction in Hoima is the Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve which covers an area of approximately 87 square kilometers. The reserve offers visitors a chance to see various wildlife species including elephants, Lions, Buffaloes and antelopes among others. There are also several bird species that can be spotted within the reserve. Another interesting site for visitors is the Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom Palace located within Hoima town.

This palace was built by King Omukama Kabalega who ruled Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom from 1869 until his capture by British colonialists in 1899. The palace showcases traditional architecture and artifacts that depict the history and culture of Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom. Hoima also boasts several cultural events throughout the year such as Nkwanzi Cultural Festival which celebrates Banyoro culture through music, Dance and food among other activities. Other cultural events include Empango Festival which marks the coronation anniversary of Omukama (king) Rukirabasaija Agutamba Solomon Gafabusa Iguru I.

For those interested in religious tourism, There are several churches within Hoima town such as St Peter’s Anglican Cathedral and Hoima Catholic Cathedral which both have unique architectural designs. There is also the Bujumbura Mosque which is one of the oldest mosques in Uganda. Hoima is a city rich in culture and history with several attractions for visitors to explore.
