Jiexiu is a small city located in the Shanxi Province of China. It is situated in the central part of the province, About 75 kilometers southwest of Taiyuan, The provincial capital. The city has a population of approximately 500, 000 people and covers an area of around 1, 300 square kilometers. Jiexiu has a rich history that dates back over 2, 500 years. It was first established during the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC) as a small village called Jiexiugou. Later it became known as Jiexiu during the Han Dynasty (206 BC – AD 220).

During this time, It served as an important military base for protecting against invasions from neighboring tribes. One of Jiexiu’s most famous landmarks is the Shanhua Temple. This temple was built during the Tang Dynasty (618-907) and is considered one of China’s four great Buddhist temples alongside Mount Wutai in Shanxi Province, Mount Emei in Sichuan Province and Putuo Mountain in Zhejiang Province. The temple complex covers an area of over 30 hectares and features numerous halls, Pagodas and statues. Another popular attraction in Jiexiu is Wang Family Courtyard.

This massive complex covers an area of around 250, 000 square meters and consists of five courtyards with more than 200 rooms altogether. The courtyard was built by Wang family members over several generations between the mid-16th century to early-20th century. The city also boasts several other historical sites such as Qiao Family Compound which was made famous by Zhang Yimou’s film Raise The Red Lantern. This compound features traditional Chinese architecture with elaborate courtyards surrounded by high walls to protect against bandits or invaders.

In addition to its historical sites, Jiexiu also offers stunning natural scenery such as Mian Mountain. This mountain range is located about 10 kilometers from the city and features several peaks, Including the highest peak which stands at around 2, 500 meters above sea level. The mountain is also home to several temples and monasteries. Jiexiu is also known for its delicious local cuisine. Some of the most famous dishes include crispy fried chicken, Jiexiu beef noodles and Shanxi vinegar pork.
