It is situated just north of the capital city of Khartoum and is considered one of the largest and most populous cities in Sudan. With a population exceeding 1 million people, Khartoum North is a major economic hub and cultural center for the region. One of the main draws to Khartoum North is its rich history and cultural heritage. The city has been inhabited for thousands of years, With evidence dating back to ancient Nubia.

Visitors can explore historic landmarks such as the Al-Mogran Family Park which features an ancient palace dating back to 1920s colonial times. Another attraction worth visiting in Khartoum North is its vibrant markets and shopping districts. The city boasts an array of traditional souks (markets) where visitors can purchase everything from handmade crafts to local spices and textiles. Noteable History

1. The Battle of Karari occurred in 1885, where the Mahdist forces were victorious over the British army near Khartoum North, marking the end of British rule in Sudan and the start of Mahdist rule.
2. Muhammad Ahmad al-Mahdi’s tomb is situated in Omdurman, across from Khartoum North. He led a rebellion against British rule in Sudan.
3. Lord Kitchener established Gordon Memorial College to pay tribute to General Charles Gordon who died during the siege of Khartoum in 1885. It was one of Sudan’s most prestigious institutions until it was shut down during Omar al-Bashir’s regime.
4. Al-Fateh Tower is one of Khartoum North’s famous landmarks standing at over 300 feet tall and providing scenic views over both sides of the Nile.
5. Sayyid Ali al-Mirghani served as Prime Minister under Sudan’s first democratic government in 1956 and was a distinguished religious leader and political figure.
6. Ahmed Al-Kheir Abdalla was an influential poet and writer from Omdurman who played a significant role in promoting Arabic literature across Africa and beyond.
7. Hassan al-Turabi is a controversial figure who served as Speaker for Sudan’s National Assembly before becoming Secretary-General for Islamic National Front (now known as National Congress Party).
8. Dr John Garang de Mabior fought for South Sudanese independence from Sudan before his untimely death due to a helicopter crash in 2005; he hailed from Bor Town (now South Sudan).
9. Mariam Ibrahim Yusuf advocated for women’s rights and gender equality, earning her recognition through winning the International Women of Courage Award by US State Department back on 2021.
10. Mohamed Wardi was an iconic composer/musician hailing from Sudan whose works dealt with politically charged themes such as colonialism, poverty, and social injustice. He is considered one of the greatest African musicians of all time.

Sports Teams

1. Al-Hilal Club: This is one of the oldest and most successful football (soccer) clubs in Sudan, with a history dating back to 1930. The team has won numerous domestic and international titles over the years and has a large fan base.
2. Al-Merreikh Club: Another prominent football club in Khartoum North, Al-Merreikh was founded in 1928 and has also enjoyed success both domestically and internationally.
3. El-Nasr Volleyball Club: This team competes in the Sudanese Volleyball League and has won multiple championships over the years.
4. Khartoum Basketball Club: This club was formed relatively recently (in 2014) but has quickly become one of the top basketball teams in Sudan, winning back-to-back national championships in 2017 and 2018.
5. El-Ahly Handball Club: This handball team is based in Khartoum North but represents the wider El-Ahly Sporting Club organization, which includes teams from across Sudan. They have won multiple national titles as well as regional competitions such as the Arab Clubs Handball Championship.
