Korolëv is a city located in the Moscow Oblast region of Russia, Situated just 30 kilometers northeast of Moscow. The city has a population of approximately 190, 000 people and was founded in the early 1930s as a small settlement for workers building rockets and satellites for the Soviet Union’s space program. Today, Korolëv is one of Russia’s most important scientific centers known for its expertise in aerospace engineering. Visitors to Korolëv can enjoy attractions such as the RKK Energiya Museum showcasing artifacts and exhibits related to Russia’s space program.

  2. The launch of Sputnik 1: On October 4, 1957, the first artificial satellite – Sputnik 1 – was launched into orbit from Baikonur Cosmodrome near Korolëv. This event marked a significant milestone in human history as it was the first time that humans had sent an object into space.
  3. Yuri Gagarin: On April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first human being to travel into space when he orbited Earth aboard Vostok-1 spacecraft launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome.
  4. Valentina Tereshkova: She became the first woman to travel into space on June 16, 1963 when she orbited Earth aboard Vostok-6 spacecraft launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome.
  5. The launch of Mir Space Station: On February 20th,1986 Mir Space Station was launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome which remained operational until March23rd ,2001 making it one of longest-serving space stations ever operated by any country.
  6. The collapse of USSR : In December1991 after dissolution USSR many companies involved in aerospace industry were closed down leading massive unemployment among residents in city including engineers and scientists who were instrumental for success story behind Soviet Space Program.

  1. FC Znamya Truda Korolyov – a football club founded in 1922 and is one of the oldest clubs in Russia. The team has played mostly in lower divisions but has had some success winning regional championships.
  2. HC Kristall – an ice hockey club founded in 1949 that plays in the Russian Hockey League (VHL). The team has won several regional championships and reached the VHL playoffs multiple times.
  3. Volleyball Club Zarechie Odintsovo – a women’s volleyball club that was based in Korolëv until recently when it moved to nearby Odintsovo. The team has won multiple Russian Superleague titles and European Champions League medals.
  4. Basketball Club Lokomotiv-Kuban Krasnodar (Korolyov) – a men’s basketball club that was based temporarily at Sports Palace Korolev during its first season before moving to Krasnodar permanently. The team plays in the VTB United League and EuroCup competitions.
