Medinipur, Also known as Midnapore, Is a city located in the Paschim Medinipur district of West Bengal, India. The city is situated on the banks of the Kangsabati River and has a population of approximately 170, 000 people. It was once an important center for trade and commerce during colonial times due to its strategic location near major rivers and highways. The history of Medinipur dates back to the prehistoric period when it was inhabited by various indigenous tribes.

The region came under the rule of different dynasties like Mauryas, Guptas, Palas and Senas before being conquered by Muslim rulers in the 13th century.
