Nyanza is a small town located in the Southern Province of Rwanda, Approximately 100 kilometers south of Kigali, The capital city. The town has a population of around 20, 000 people and is known for its rich cultural heritage and historical significance. Previously serving as the capital city until it was moved to Kigali in 1962, Nyanza boasts historical significance. The King’s Palace Museum showcases traditional life during Rwandan monarchs’ reigns with various artifacts such as royal regalia and traditional musical instruments. Aside from its history, Nyanza also offers natural beauty with lush green hills surrounding it.
The nearby Nyungwe Forest National Park provides an opportunity to experience nature up close through hiking trails filled with exotic flora and fauna. Nyanza’s location makes it an ideal base for exploring other nearby attractions such as Lake Kivu or visiting genocide memorials like Murambi Genocide Memorial Centre which commemorates victims from one district who were killed during the genocide against Tutsi in 1994. With new hotels opening up to cater for tourists visiting this area and plans underway to construct a new airport near Nyanza, Infrastructure development has been making significant strides over recent years.
