Qarchak is a city located in the southern part of Tehran province, Iran. It’s situated on the eastern bank of the Jajrud River and has a population of around 25, 000 people. One of Qarchak’s most well-known landmarks is Qal’eh Hasan Ali Khan, An ancient fortress dating back to the Safavid era.   1. The Battle of Ray: In 1194, Qarchak witnessed the Battle of Ray between Sultan Shahabuddin Ghori’s forces and Khwarazmian Empire. Ghori emerged victorious, paving the way for his rule over much of India.
  2. Sheikh Ahmad-e Jami: Sheikh Ahmad-e Jami was an Iranian Sufi poet who resided in Qarchak during the 16th century. He is famous for his mystical poetry that explores themes such as love, spirituality, and human nature.
  3. Reza Shah Pahlavi: Reza Shah Pahlavi was an Iranian monarch who governed Iran from 1925 to 1941. During his reign, he initiated various modernization projects aimed at transforming Iran into a modern nation-state, including constructing a railway line that passed through Qarchak.
  4. The Islamic Revolution: In 1979, Iran underwent a revolution that resulted in the overthrowing of its monarchy and establishment of an Islamic republic under Ayatollah Khomeini’s leadership.

Nasrin Sotoudeh: Nasrin Sotoudeh is an Iranian human rights lawyer who has been imprisoned multiple times for her activism against Iran’s government policies on women’s rights, political prisoners’ rights, freedom of speech & assembly etc. She has been subjected to harsh treatment while incarcerated at Evin Prison including torture, bad conditions etc.
  6. Maryam Mirzakhani: Maryam Mirzakhani (May 3rd, 1977 – July 14th, 2017) was born in Tehran, Iran. She became the first woman to win the Fields Medal in 2014 for her work on complex geometry. She died on July 14th, 2017 due to breast cancer.
