Sonpur is a small town situated in the Saran district of Bihar, India. It’s located on the banks of River Gandak, Also known as Narayani in Nepal. The town is famous for its annual cattle fair, Which attracts thousands of visitors from all over India and abroad. The Sonepur Mela or Cattle Fair is one of the largest fairs in Asia and has been held here for over 100 years. It starts on Kartik Poornima (the full moon day) in November and lasts for about a month. The fair offers a unique blend of trade, Commerce, Entertainment and religious activities.

People come here to buy and sell animals like elephants, Horses, Camels, Cows, Buffaloes etc., As well as other goods like handicrafts, Clothes and household items. Apart from trading activities at the fairground during daytime hours; cultural programs are also organized every evening which includes folk dances & music performances by artists from different parts of India. The town has an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva called Harihar Nath Temple built during Gupta Dynasty period (320-550 AD).

Legend has it that Lord Rama visited this place during his exile period with Sita & Lakshman while they were on their way to Janakpuri where he met King Janak’s daughter Sita who eventually became his wife. Another attraction near Sonpur town is Gandhi Setu – one of the longest river bridges in Asia spanning across River Ganges connecting Patna with Hajipur city. The bridge offers breathtaking views especially during sunrise & sunset times when sky changes its colors creating beautiful hues reflecting over water surface below. Sonpur can be easily reached by road or rail transportation system.
