Tchaourou has a population of around 100, 000 people and is known for its rich cultural heritage and historical significance. The city’s name comes from the Bariba language spoken by many of its inhabitants. Tchao means to leave, While rou means place. Together, They translate to mean a place where people leave from or depart. This name reflects Tchaourou’s history as an important trading center during the trans-Saharan trade era.

One of Tchaourou’s most significant landmarks is the Palace of Kpasse, Which was built in the late 19th century by King Kpasse Houédjissinon. The palace served as both his residence and administrative center during his reign over the Bariba Kingdom.
