Weihai is a coastal city located in the eastern part of Shandong province, China. The city is situated on the northeastern tip of the Shandong Peninsula and is surrounded by sea on three sides. It covers an area of 5, 436 square kilometers and has a population of approximately 2.9 million people. The history of Weihai dates back to ancient times when it was a strategic military location during the Qing Dynasty and served as an important naval base for China’s navy during World War II.   1. In 1895, the First Sino-Japanese War resulted in a naval battle at Weihaiwei, with Japan emerging victorious and taking control of the city.
  2. Liang Qichao, a prominent Chinese scholar and reformer, spent years in exile in Weihai after being banished by the Qing Dynasty government for his political views.
  3. Zhang Xueliang, also known as The Young Marshal, was a Chinese warlord who briefly controlled Weihai as part of his territory during the early 20th century.
  4. From 1898 to 1930, Weihai served as an important treaty port under British control for trade and commerce between China and Europe.
  5. During World War II from 1937 to 1945, Japanese forces occupied Weihai.

  1. Weihai Golden Bulls Basketball Club: The Weihai Golden Bulls are a professional basketball team that competes in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA). They were established in 2005 and have become one of the most successful teams in the league. The team has won two CBA championships (in 2013-14 and 2014-15) and has produced several notable players such as Ding Yanyuhang, who currently plays for the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA.
  2. Shandong Luneng Taishan Football Club: Although not solely based in Weihai, Shandong Luneng Taishan FC is one of the most popular football clubs among fans from Weihai due to its close proximity to the city. The club was founded in Jinan, Shandong Province but represents all of Shandong Province including Weihai. It plays its home games at Jinan Olympic Sports Center Stadium which is located about 500 km away from Weihai.
  3. Weihan Greentown FC: Founded as Zhejiang Greentown FC based out of Hangzhou City before moving to Meizhou City Guangdong province for two seasons between 2017–19 then relocated to Sanya City Hainan province for one season before moving again this time to play their home matches at Wenshan Sports Centre Stadium situated on Huancui District, Wehai City. They are now known as Weihan Greentown FC. The team currently plays in China League One which is the second tier of Chinese football.
  4. Weihai Sharks Basketball Club: Another basketball team based in Weihai is the Weihai Sharks. They were founded in 2015 and play in the National Basketball League (NBL), which is a lower-tier league than CBA. Despite being a relatively new team, they have already won one NBL championship (in 2018-19).
