Yavatmāl is a district situated in the western region of Maharashtra, India. It is located on the eastern edge of Vidarbha and has an area of 13, 582 square kilometers with a population of over 2 million people. This district is renowned for its high agricultural yields and produces crops such as cotton, Soybeans, Pulses, Oilseeds, Maize and sugarcane. Additionally, Yavatmāl has a flourishing dairy industry with numerous milk processing plants within its borders. The city itself has many notable landmarks including the Jain temple complex at Ghatanji which dates back to the 7th century AD.

Another significant religious site is the Kaleshwar temple which attracts thousands of devotees every year during Mahashivaratri celebrations. Yavatmāl also boasts several wildlife sanctuaries such as Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary that spans over 148 square kilometers and houses tigers, Leopards, Sloth bears and hyenas among other animals. Painganga Wildlife Sanctuary is another popular tourist destination that is home to rare bird species like grey junglefowl and painted francolin.

Noteable History

  5. Nag Panchami worships snakes as they are considered sacred creatures in Indian mythology. In Yavatmāl, people offer milk to snake idols or live snakes on this day.
  6. Makar Sankranti marks the end of winter solstice month which signifies longer days ahead meaning more sunlight ,more warmth ,more growth ,and more food .People take dip in holy rivers like Ganga,Saraswati,Yamuna etc .
  7. Gudi Padwa marks new year for Maharashtrians falling on first day after Holi .People decorate their houses with rangolis,mango leaves ,garlands etc .They also hoist gudi outside their house which symbolises victory .
  8. Rath Yatra celebrates Lord Jagannath who is believed to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu .It takes place during June or July with a chariot procession starting from Jagannath temple and going around the city .
  9. Eid-Ul-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan month for Muslims .People wear new clothes ,offer prayers, and enjoy delicious food with their family and friends.
  10. Christmas marks the birth of Jesus Christ celebrated on 25th December every year.People decorate Christmas tree, exchange gifts, attend church services etc.
