  3. The Contra War: During the 1980s, Estelí was a major battleground in the Contra War between US-backed rebels and the Sandinista government. Many civilians were killed or displaced during this conflict.
  4. Rubén Darío: Darío is considered one of Nicaragua’s greatest poets and writers, and he spent some time living in Estelí while working for El Nuevo Diario newspaper.

  5. Leones de Occidente: This basketball team joined the Nicaraguan Basketball League (LNB) recently, having been established only three years ago; however, they are already one of the league’s top teams.
