The construction of Islamabad began in 1960 and was completed in 1978.
The city has been the site of several important political events, including the signing of the Islamabad Declaration in 2016 by leaders of Afghanistan, Pakistan, China, and the United States.

Benazir Bhutto – former Prime Minister of Pakistan who was assassinated in Rawalpindi near Islamabad.
